<br />TO: <br />FROM: <br />DATE: <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />VIII-C-l <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers <br />Dave Osberg, City Administrator <br />August 16, 2007 <br />Fire and Emergency Services Director Appointment <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED CITY COUNCIL ACTION <br /> <br />It is unanimously recommended by the Public Safety Committee (City Councilmembers <br />Ed Riveness, Danna Elling Schultz and Barb Hollenbeck) that the full City Council take <br />action appointing Assistant Fire Chief Mike Schutt to the position of Fire and Emergency <br />Services Director, with an effective date of September 29,2007. <br /> <br />The recommended compensation scheduled, based on current 2007 rates is as follows: <br /> <br />Start; <br />1-1-08; <br />9-29-08; <br />1-1-09; <br />1-1-10; <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />Level "E": <br />Level "D": <br />Level "e": <br />Level "B": <br />Level "A": <br /> <br />$79,788.80 <br />$82,846.40 <br />$85,904.00 <br />$88,982.40 <br />$92,040.00 <br /> <br />Current Fire Chief Mark Holmes is scheduled to retire effective September 28,2007. <br />Throughout the last several weeks, Staffhas been working with the Public Safety <br />Committee and ultimately the full City Council approved, a scheduled for the <br />advertisement, recruitment and hiring ofthe person to fill the position of Fire and <br />Emergency Services Director. <br /> <br />On Tuesday July 31,2007 nine candidates were interviewed for the position of Fire and <br />Emergency Services Director. Each of the nine candidates was interviewed by two <br />different oral interview panels. One room included six members, asking more technical <br />questions, and another panel included five members, asking more general questions. City <br />Councilmember Ed Riveness and Assistant City Administrator Melanie Mesko Lee were <br />in the Volunteer Room with the panel asking the more general questions. Each of the nine <br />candidates also visited with me in my office, for about 30 minutes, discussing a variety of <br />topics, and addressing a few questions. <br />
