<br />...Grand Excursion 2004 continued from Page 1 <br /> <br />The Grand Excursion of 1854 was a spectacular <br />public relations and tourism event in U.S. pre-Civil <br />War history. The event celebrated the completion <br />of the first railroad connection to the Mississippi <br />River, along with a festive steamboat journey by <br />1,200 travelers from Rock Island, Illinois to St. <br />Paul. Ex-President Millard Fillmore was the most <br />famous celebrity on the Grand Excursion, along <br />with fifty newspaper editors. Through letters and <br />editorials, their writings informed and excited 1he <br />nation about the. Upper Mississippi Valley and <br />western frontier. The national and international <br />publicity that resulted from this event helped spur <br />the influx of settlement and tourism to the Upper <br />Midwest. <br /> <br />THE GRAND EXCURSION 2004 Will: <br /> <br />COMMEMORATE the historic occasion of the <br />original Grand Excursion of 1854 by establishing <br />a permanent legacy and by serving as a catalyst <br />for lasting regional initiatives and improvements <br />along the Upper Mississippi River. <br />CELEBRATE the 150'h anniversary of the Grand <br />Excursion of 1854 by developing and <br />implementing a series of events focusing on the <br />Grand Flotilla; and through these celebrations, <br />bring recognition and awareness of this event to <br />the world. <br /> <br />2003 SCHEDULE <br />May 2 - June 8, 2003 <br />Friday: 4 - 8 p.m. Saturday: 2 -8 p.m. <br /> <br />June 9 - August 31, 2003 <br />Tuesday & Thursday: 3 ~ 8 p.m. <br />Saturday: 2, - 8 p.m. <br /> <br />~~~ <br />GRAND EXCURSION 2004 t. <br /> <br />EDUCATE, throughout the region, about the significance <br />of the Grand Excursion through initiatives, curricula, and <br />other special events. <br /> <br />The capstone of Grand Excursion 2004 is the Grand <br />Flotilla, a ten-day journey (June 25-July 5) on and aiong <br />the Mississippi River and the largest steamboat flotilla in <br />100 years. A dozen great and magnificent boats will be <br />complemented by authentic steam locomotive train tours <br />and other adventure tracks. Grand Excursion 2004 is <br />the rediscovery of a national treasure and the highlight of <br />a summer celebration on the Mississippi River. <br /> <br />While the Grand Excursion 2004 will be a phenomenal <br />event and a great way to showcase the City of Hastings, <br />it will take many individuals, firms, organizations, and <br />many volunteers to develop, manage, and implement the <br />event in this area.
