Minutes of the Meeting of January 15, 1992
1. Ro11.
Present: Commissioners Simacek, Smith, Goderstad, Hoeschen and
Thorsen. Staff Grossman.
Absent: Commissioner Malm.
2. Minutes of the Meeting of September 4, 1991.
Mr. Smith moved and Mr. Goderstad seconded approval as
printed. Motion carried, 5-0.
3. Proposals for layout of new tour guide.
Mr. Goderstad moved and Mr. Hoeschen seconded approval of the
proposal by Bronwyn Clark Skov to provide camera ready copy for the
printer, at a time and materials cost not to exceed $250.
4. Interview applications for vacancies on MPC.
There being two vacancies, resulting from Mr. Hoeschen
deciding not to apply for reappointment, and from Mr. Stoneberg
passing away, the Commission advertised and took applications.
As an architect did not apply, Chairman Simacek will ask that
one of the local architects agree to serve on the Commission in
conformance with CLG requirements. Ms. LuAnn Stoffel, Ms. Janie
Lindberg and Ms. Marie Coutu submitted applications and were
interviewed.
Mr. Hoeschen moved and Mr. Smith seconded that Ms. Coutu be
recommended to Council for appointment, together with an architect
willing to serve. If an architect cannot be found, the Commission
will make a second recommendation. Motion carried, 5-0.
5. Recommend CLG Grant Application.
Mr. Smith summarized the application for $7,500 in matching
funds from the National Park Service (through the State
Preservation office) for the purpose of preservation planning,
specifically a study of the regional, state and local historic
contexts found in Hastings. If awarded, a contract historian will
be hired in October 1992, the project will be complete in July
1993.
Mr. Thorsen moved and Mr. Goderstad seconded recommendation of
the grant to city council. Motion carried, 5-0.
6. Election of officers for 1992.
Mr. Hoeschen moved and Mr. Smith seconded the nomination of
Mr. Simacek for Chairman. There being no other nominations, Mr.
Simacek elected by voice vote.
Mr. Thorsen moved and Mr. Goderstad seconded the nomination of
Mr. Smith as Vicechairman. There being no other nominations, Mr.
Smith elected by voice vote.
9. Hastings Historic Handbooks for visiting Russian Students.
Mr. Goderstad moved and Mr. Thorsen
handbooks to 24 visiting Russian students.

The city finance officer, Ms. Webster, notified the commission
that the handbook sales now totaled $5,853. The printing cost in
1985 was $6,000.
10. Bills.

National Trust for Preservation - dues $35.00
Traditional Building - subscription - $18.00
Olsons Greenhouse - floral tribute $42.00
Mr. Smith moved and Mr. Hoeschen seconded approval. Motion
carried, 5-0.
11. Adjournment.
Mr. Goderstad moved and Mr. Smith seconded adjournment. Motion
carried.
