HomeMy WebLinkAbout20090202 - VI-08 Memo To: Mayor Hicks and City Council Members From: Justin Fortney, Associate planner/ Heritage Preservation Specialist Date: February 2, 2008 Subject: Heritage Preservation Commission- 3 expired terms REQUEST The City Council is asked to approve one reappointment and authorize advertising for three vacancies on the Heritage Preservation Commission: REAPPOINTMENT Amy Martin – reappointment– 1/1/09 to 12/31/11 Commissioner Martin has served on the HPC for two terms since 2003. The HPC has asked that the City Council reappoint Commissioner Martin for another term. ADVERTISEMENT The HPC will now have 3 vacancies that they would like to fill. One vacancy is from last year when there was only application made for two vacancies. The two other vacancies are from Commissioners that did not seek reappointment when their terms expired this year: David Warg had served 4 terms since 1996 and Mel Behnke served 1 ½ terms since 2005. Mel Behnke has agreed to continue to serve until a replacement is found. BACKGROUND The HPC has 9 members with 3 terms expiring every year. These appointments should have been done in December, but staff was behind schedule in notifying the 3 Commissioners that their terms were expiring. REQUESTED ACTION Reappoint Amy Martin Advertise for 3 new commissioners ATTACHMENT Notice for new commissioners HASTINGS HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION SEEKS APPLICANTS Residents of Hastings interested in serving on the Commission may pick up applications at City Hall, 101 E. 4th Street, call 651-480-2381 to have them mailed or download from www.ci.hastings.mn.us. Applicants must be residents of the City and have a commitment to the preservation of the community’s architectural heritage. The Commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Special meetings and committee meetings are called when necessary, but are rare. The Commission reviews exterior changes proposed for designated historic properties, nominates properties to City Council for designation as historic properties, and advises the City and property owners on preservation matters. Training or experience such as historic restoration, history, architecture, landscape architecture, archaeology, urban studies and planning, real estate or law, are useful to the Commission’s work, but not required.
