Parks Maintenance Activities
• The outdoor ice rink conditions have been the best anyone can remember throughout this entire
season. Some of this can be attributed to the weather we have had. Additional credit must go to our
maintenance staff for doing a great job to make sure each of the 12 rinks are ready for the public each
day.
• Staff is devoting time and effort to repair and maintain equipment that they use during this winter
season.
• The two trucks that were declared excess equipment are being prepared for sale.
• All of the staff completed the Right-to-Know training. This is an annually, required training.
• Four staff members attended training with Gopher State One Ca11 to Iearn how to use the I-Tic online
method of doing requests for underground work Iocates.
• The City Forester is currently working closely with the Public `Norks Department on the boulevard tree
clearance pruning program. Notifications are being distributed to property owners where work will be
performed.
Warming Houses
• As of 2-4-09, the 6 rinks combined have hosted 4,918 skaters.
• Rated most popular to least -Pioneer, ~Iallin, Lions, Arena, ~LTilson, Isabel.
• Rinks are scheduled to close on February 16, 2009, weather permitting.
Frosty Frolic
• Held on Friday January 23~d at Pioneer Park from 5-8PM
• It was freezing outside, -20 degrees.
• Approximately 150-170 skaters participated.
• Included were on ice games, hot chocolate, popcorn, and a bonfire.
• Next year it is anticipated that we may add more on-ice games
Civic Arena
• Rec-Turf Inc was the turf bid winner at X75,650. The new turf will be installed between March 19 - 23.
• On Jan. 28, 29, and Feb. 1, started experiencing a lot of graffiti on the inside walls of the East arena.
Pictures were taken and the police tailed on the 2/ 1 occurrence.
• In January, there were ten high school hockey games and one youth tournament weekend.
Rec~clin~
• An Earth Day Celebration is being planned for Saturday, Apri125~ this year out at the Civic Arena.
New this year will be an Earth Day poster contest for Hastings 5~ graders with all posters, including
the winning posters, displayed at the event. We will also be having Pioneer SecureShred, who will have
a secure shredding truck with attendant in the Arena parking lot during the event. Residents will have
a chance to shred up to two banker boxes worth of confidential documents. All paper shredded that
day will be recycled and will add to the total tonnage Hastings recycles in 2D09.
