The Wetland Health Evaluation Project volunteers have completed the survey work for the 2009 season. We will share data with you when it is available. ? Bituminous maintenance contract work on the City trail is expected to begin by the contractor soon. We are having about 2.5 miles completed this year. ? Parks Maintenance staff worked overtime to help with the Rivertown Days events. The combined experience of our team made the set up and cleaning run smoothly. ? A new bench is being installed at Pioneer Park. This is made possible through a donation from the Hastings High School class of 1959. ? National Night Out again used various City Parks for the annual event. Maintenance staff helps to set up and cleanup. ? Staff continues to research and prepare for how we can deal with a possible Emerald Ash Borer infestation in Hastings. Adjustments to the future budgets in forestry are part of the preparations. ? All staff members were trained by local fire department personnel on use of fire extinguishers. ? 3 staff members attended a MPCA Turf Maintenance workshop for new certification. ? Our crew installed a new irrigation zone at Wallin Park to better manage the turf around the picnic shelter. ? With the completion of the HYAA summer sports we have started turf renovation projects that include aeration, fertilization & seeding. ? The Tree Trust Summer Youth crew has completed many projects this summer. Our staff worked closely with them to: Rejuvenate horseshoe courts, shrub beds, and build & install a new bench at Riverwood Park. o Paint the baseball concessions & storage buildings, install 2 new paver patios, and install o landscaping at the east gate of Vet’s Complex. The City has partnered with the Minnesota Bed & Breakfast Association (Pam Thorsen) on a grant application for the Minnesota GreenCorps program through the MPCA. If selected, two interns would be supplied to work with both organizations from September, 2009 through next summer helping with forestry and green living initiatives and education. The majority of the forestry intern’s time would be spent with the Parks & Recreation Department and the Living Green intern would spend most of the time with the MBBA.
