HomeMy WebLinkAbout11-10-2009 NRRC 07 Departmental Updates City of Hastings Parks & Recreation th 920 W 10 St, Hastings MN 55033 Ph: (651) 480-6175 Fax: (651) 437-5396 Web: www.ci.hastings.mn.us “Creating Community Through People, Parks, and Programs” Natural Resources and Recreation Commission Departmental Updates – November, 2009 Parks Maintenance Activities The broadleaf herbicide program for the year has been completed. ? The party wagon has been put into storage for the season. ? All the portable picnic tables are brought in to the JMF. ? October 16 is the last day for having any summer seasonal staff help. ? th Winterizing of the irrigation systems and seasonal use buildings are done. ? The Mississippi boat dock & Isabel fishing pier and gangway have been prepared for winter. ? The staff completed helping to put away the shade canopies at the Aquatic Center ? Our staff helped to put the carpet from the east Civic Arena rink into storage. ? New park signs were installed at Pioneer Park, Jaycee Park and the Aquatic Center. ? We partnered with FMR & the High School Biology class to collect native prairie seed at the Sand ? Coulee. These seeds will be grown up and planted next year for restoration of the prairie on city property. Two concrete pads & memorial benches were installed at the S.W. Ponding Basin. ? Three staff members completed the Tree Inspector Fall Recertification workshop. ? We completed the removal and recycling of trash that was collected by multiple volunteer groups along ? the Vermillion River in our Parks. New fuel inventory computer system and software has been installed at the Joint Maintenance ? Facility. Staff worked with an Eagle Scout candidate to install benches for an outdoor classroom and a canoe ? storage rack at Lake Rebecca Park. We are overseeing the contract work to remove several trees downtown on Sibley Street that have ? overgrown their planting space. New tree grates are installed and trees will be planted in the spring. Staff continues to work with the Engineering Dept. on the Spiral Boulevard Project including the new ? trail connection from 31 Street through the ravine to Vermillion Falls Park. Paving is expected to be st complete this fall. Snow removal plans are in place and staff members have been assigned dates they are on call for ? emergency work. Civic Arena Fall ice season over and now we are in the winter season 10/12/09-3/14/10. ? Lowered heat system over East arena bleacher by 6’ft. Hope this helps to keep it warmer, also serviced ? the 5 burners in the system. Youth program has had an increase of beginner level skaters from 105 to 170. ? Farmington and Rosemount has contracted ice again this season. Mostly all on Saturdays and ? Sundays. New turf was a hit by the users. They say it was more comfortable to play on. ? We were ? able to provide new attractions such as MN Zoo Animals, Haunted Hallway and a few new games. Our donations were strong and volunteers amazing! I have been working with Police Chief Mike McMenomy to implement a new Social Host Ordinance for ? Hastings: Social Host Ordinances A social host ordinance holds adults responsible for underage o drinking on their property even if they did not directly provide the alcohol. Under Minnesota law it is illegal to provide alcohol to underage persons (with an exception for parents providing to their own children at home under direct supervision). Social host ordinances provide a tool for local law enforcement to address homeowners who allow youth to drink. The first social host ordinance in Minnesota was enacted in Chaska. Since then many cities and communities have enacted a similar ordinance. Work begins Friday, Nov. 6 with Youth Planning Council at Hastings High School and the Adopt a ? Family Coin Drive. There will be another Local Jam soon. I am in the process of connecting with and locating High ? School Bands. Committee work regarding Alternative Spring break will begin in November as well. ?
