HomeMy WebLinkAbout20011217 Memo-RedistrictingMEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers FROM: Dave Osberg, Ci#y Administrator DATE: December 17, 2001 SUBJECT: Redistricting The Charter Commission conducted a meeting on Wednesday December 12, 2001 to review further options Staff had prepared regarding redistricting of the City ward boundaries. Staff has attached three maps far the City Council to review. The first is a map of the existing ward boundaries. The second is Option A, which is the map of the ward boundaries that the Charter Commission favors, for the City Council to consider. The final map, is Option B, which is "close second" choice of the Charter Commission for ward boundaries. Both options under consideration retain the same polling locations and no current member of the City Council is faced with a change in their ward. Furthermore, Option A appears to provide the entire City with the most flexibility for growth, as a[1 four wards have the opportunity for growth, and are not land locked. The Charter Commission is scheduled to conduct its next meeting on Thursday January 17`h, 2002. Prior to that time, Staff would appreciate any feedback from the City Council on these two options. The goal would be to have the Charter Commission approve the necessary Resolutions setting the ward boundaries, and then present to the City Council for approval, through the normal Ordinance adoption process. Please let Melanie or I know if you have any comments, and in particular serious objections to the options identified an the attached maps. The Charter Commission has worked hard during the last several months, reviewing numerous options, and has concluded that those presented, are the best ones for final consideration. David M. I prefer Option-B because I feel it is the least disruptive and the least confusing of the 2 options for our voting citizens to understand. ft is much like our current boundaries except they are all expanded somewhat. Melanie was going to call Carol and see if what I heard ar understand Carol say is correct. Apparently at least one option that has been presented does split Hastings legislative districts.
