Census Data & Redistricting
Administrative AssistantlCity Clerk Melanie Mesko discussed the 2000 census
figures with the commission and noted that the latest population is 18,202. Also,
every ten years following a census, the City needs to redistrict to ensure that the
ward populations are as "equal as practicable" as per state law.
Mesko requested direction from the commission regarding redistricting. The
commission directed staff to revise the wards with the following considerations:
• Recognize current ward Councilmember locations and keep them in their
current wards;
• Recognize current ward polling locations;
• Recognize future growth patterns within the City.
• Try to keep Highways 61 & ~5 as natural dividers between wards
Based on that feedback, Mesko said that she would continue to work on options
for the commission to consider at its next meeting.
