The gates at Veterans Athletic Complex are now open.  nd Perennial flower beds such as the 2 Street Hill location have been cleaned this spring.  All the trails which we plow during the winter have been swept.  Staff members have worked with the Public Works Department on flood cleanup and continue to work on sites such as the  public dock and Levee park trail as the water level drops. New bikes have been obtained, a storage facility made, and a plan for maintenance and loaning out to the public was done.  Initial field painting for rugby, lacrosse and soccer has been completed.  The Service Learning Students went through a pruning class put on by our Forestry Staff. They will use these skills as they  volunteer to work in our Parks. Staff continues to convert equipment from snow to mowing use.  Picnic Shelters at Lions and Wallin Parks were converted for summer use.  Staff attended training at the Shade Tree Short Course and the Damage Prevention Workshop for Gopher State One Call.  th Plans are in place for this year’s Bituminous Trail Maintenance. The bids will be open on May 4 and work is scheduled to  th be completed by June 24. Hastings Family Aquatic Center Plaster project has resumed for 2010  Work continued on removal of old tile and hollow portions of plaster  Interviews for seasonal positions are complete and decisions will be made by April 16, 2010  Swim lesson registration has begun and in the first day of registration over 135 participants registered  Hastings Civic Arena Arena is in the dry floor season now. There are 93 hrs contracted by soccer. No lacrosse as of yet or ball practice. What a  great spring to be outdoors! However, this hurts the indoor season at the Arena. At the State Gov level, there is the issue of air quality for indoor arenas. This could affect the operations of arenas in the  future to go to all electric or battery powered equipment (Ice edgers and resurfacers) by 2015. The monitory of air quality equipment for CO2 and NO2 gases to give a continuous reading of the air levels. If levels get high, they are set up to start more air flow through the arenas. Recycling th We have 163 people signed up to volunteer at our Parks & Trail Cleanup on April 24! Folks will get a free Earth Day t-shirt,  a tree seedling donated by Dakota Electric, and breakfast. Then we’ll set out to clean up our major parks and trails. Parks staff will be collecting the garbage and recycling this event generates and will be disposing of it properly.
