From: Barry Bernstein, Parks and Recreation Director
Subject: 2011 Budget
As many of you know, the City is once again facing a considerable budget shortfall due to a number of
circumstances relating to the economic downturn. As part of our budget issues, department heads are
considering several budget easing measures and the Parks and Recreation Department is no exception.
I have listed some of the proposed possible budget ideas for your information and consideration.
Budget expense reductions:
Outside skating rinks – 3 shelters open instead of 5
General budget funding reductions across the board
Reduce the pool’s hours by one hour per day
Reduce the arena operation to 9 months
Reduce or eliminate entirely our commitment to the Joint Powers agreement with the School District
Discontinue the Youth First program
Reduce/eliminate the City reforestation program
Budget revenue increases:
Youth participation fee for outside facilities (ball fields/soccer fields)
Charge for use of the disk golf course
Additional tournaments at Vet’s Park
Increase fees for services across the board
Charge for boat launch
Increase advertising at all facilities
City staff has been directed to have the 2011 budget figures into the Finance Department by the end of July. If
the PRC wishes to discuss any of these or other budget related items, a special meeting may be necessary as the
preliminary budget will be submitted prior to the next PRC meeting.
Thank you!
