Hastings is among the leaders in terms of acres of parkland set aside per capita with one acre of parkland for every 32 citizens. Up until 1950 or so the City of Hastings did not own parks; they were run on a volunteer basis. In 1968 the City Council passed a zoning ordinance that required housing developers to dedicate at least 5% of the area being developed as parks. In 1976 this ordinance was updated to tie the percentage of land dedicated to parks to the population density of the property being developed. This ordinance has been responsible for the development of the majority of parkland in Hastings. th 2)A city-wide July 4 celebration was held at Lake Isabel.
