“Creating Community Through People, Parks, and Programs”
Parks & Recreation Commission Memorandum
To: Parks & Recreation Commission Members
From: Barry Bernstein, Parks & Recreation Director
Date: 11/4/2010
Subject: Veterans Park Baseball Field
Commission Action Requested:
None – Informational only.
Background Information:
The Hastings Parks and Recreation Department has been investigating the possibility of further utilizing
the Vet’s Baseball field for younger age groups who use 75’ basepaths and 56’ pitching distance in
combination to our exisiting field users. The thought behind this concept is to relocate current play from
Wallin Park and Lions Park and to maximize play at Vet’s Baseball field. As you know, the Parks and
Recreation Department has been receiving complaints from these two neighborhoods on the amount of
organized play at these neighborhood parks. In addition, the City could focus our maintenance operations
into one area. The concept of relocating the teams who play at these neighborhood parks to Vet’s Park is
worthy of a discussion. The Parks and Recreation Department has discussed this issue with the Hastings
Hawks Baseball Team and other potential users of Vet’s Baseball field.
Financial Impact:
The transition would have minimal impact.
Staff Recommendations:
After discussing this with current and possible future users, this idea may not be practical.
Parks & Recreation Committee of Council Discussion:
Has not been brought forward to the Committee of Council at this point.
