Departmental Updates – March, 2011
Parks Maintenance Activities
st
The winter skating season came to an end on February 21 due to poor ice conditions and a lot of snow.
Park maintenance staff members have been busy getting equipment ready for spring.
Four maintenance staff members will be going to a seminar in March for renewing their license in tree inspector
certification.
With all the snow this year, the staff on hand managed to have all the trails open throughout the city.
Parks has been approved to purchase a new Groundsmaster 5900 series mower to replace the old 580
Groundsmaster.
With all the snow that will be melting, the Parks and Recreation staff will be monitoring the potential for
flooding of the Mississippi River area so we can make plans accordingly.

Hastings Civic Arena
Held 2 first round High School section 3 AA hockey. Girls was 2/9/11 and Boys was 2/24/11. Both were great
nights as both won their games to move on. Concessions also did well.
2/28/11 - Having a repair on # 1 vilter compressor top end service cost about $3,600. Then we will have the
Frick / York repaired with a front shaft seal $2,500.
Season is winding down… East rink closes on 3/6/11 Sunday night and then 3/13/11 Sunday night the West rink
closes. The turf season begins 3/21/11 Monday for 6 weeks with 146 hours contracted to Soccer. Cross your
fingers… a bad cold spring will help to get more rental hours!
