This issue’s historical photo dates
from June 1915 showing a canopied
Stroud boat launch down on the
Mississippi River.
The Stroud family began their machine
shop in Hastings in 1885. They
manufactured motors, pumps, boat
and marine engines, garnering many
patents along the way. Their engines
were used all around town, including
pumping water in the Dakota
County Courthouse.
In 1901 Charles Stroud built his first
automobile with a rear engine on a
buggy chassis. His second car, built
in 1906, was 8 horsepower built on
a metal chassis with a front engine,
friction drive with single tube rubber
tires. He was issued the first drivers
license in this city in 1906. His 1907
automobile had 12 horsepower and
was shown to some Minneapolis
