1. Homeless Shelter - Former Caturia Smidt Funeral Home
Director Hinzman provided a summary of Frazier Recovery Services desire to purchase the former
th
Caturia Smidt Funeral Home at 201 7 Street E for operation of a homeless shelter for up to 24 adults.
The property is zoned R-2 and does not allow for the proposed use. The Committee is asked to consider
whether to direct staff to explore an amendment to allow the use.
Committee Members discussed:
Allowance of homeless shelters in other zones.
Other homeless shelters in Hastings
Calls to police from homeless shelters or similar facilities.
Is a 24 bed facility a typical size for a facility
Any unique aspects about the former funeral home site that are advantageous for a homeless
shelter.
Other locations for a homeless shelter
What a typical day of a homeless individual within the shelter consists of.
Fit of the use and intensity within the neighborhood.
Action: Motion by Leifeld, second by Vaughan to not explore a change to the zoning code to allow a 24
bed homeless shelter at the former Caturia Smidt Funeral Home. Motion approved 3-0.
