HASTINGS HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION
Minutes of January 17,2006,7:00 p.m.,City HaD
I. Quorum: Commissioners Warg, St. James, Sovik-Siemens, Simacek, Behnke, Goderstad,
Martin and Hellie present; Staff: Grossman. Chairman Warg called the meeting to order.
II. Minutes of November 15,2005: Goderstad moved and Martin seconded approval of
minutes with one spelling correction; motion carried.
III. Review of building permits or design proposals
200. E. Second. The Route Bike Shop - sign design. Warg moved and Simacek seconded
approval of the design with the commissions' recommendation that serifed lettering be used;
motion carried, 8-0.
IV. Business.
A. Interview. Julie Hicks, applicant for HPC, met with the commission. Goderstad
moved and St. James seconded a recommendation to the Mayor and Council in support
of the appointment of Ms. Hicks to the HPC. Motion carried, 8-0.
B. Election of officers for 2006.
Simacek nominated, St. James seconded Goderstad to be Chair; there being no other
nominations, Goderstad was elected, 8-0.
Sovik.-Siemens nominated and Goderstad seconded Martin to be Vice Chair; there
being no other nominations, Martin was elected, 8-0.
V. Information & reports
A. Committee Reviewof2212Dd Street E. (Gardner House) approved replacement
windows.
B. Committee Review of312 4tb Street E. (Tom Bates) approved stove pipe location.
C. Painting green treated material. Behnke reported a product and process recommended
by Hirschfields. Other vendors will be asked if they have similar products.
D. Porch flooring. Hellie stressed that the guidelines require existing porch flooring to be
replaced with similar flooring material and that reconstructed porches should use
material compatible with the period of the building. The commission needs to be clear
about floor materials in the future. Ordinary planks, usually green-treated, are
commonly used for replacements as if porches were decks.
E. 314 E. 7th Street. Staff has contacted the owners' son. Approval for demolition is likely
to be requested because the December fire badly damaged the structure of the building.
A desire to save and reuse some architectural components was expressed.
F. The Hastings Sesquicentennial (1857-2007) working group held its first meeting on
January 17 at 7 p.m.
VI. Adjournment. Goderstad moved and Martin seconded adjournment; motion carried.
