',; <br /> <br />Now that spring is approaching, " <br />residents and drivers are again reminded <br />that as the weather warms up, there will be an <br />increase in people out walking, biking, skate <br />boarding and roller blading, using the streets and <br />paths in our City. Here are some safety tips for <br />people out enjoying the spring weather to <br />remember.. . <br /> <br />~ Always try to have a walking <br />If partner ~ith you on your walk. If <br />you can t have a walking partner, <br />always try to walk in a <br />residential area where you can <br />easily get help if needed. <br /> <br />~ When walking, always try to <br />If stay on the sidewalk and off the <br />roadway when sidewalks are <br />available. If no sidewalks are <br />available, stay as close to the <br />curb as possible and try to walk <br />facing traffic. <br /> <br />~ Always wear light colored <br />if clothing, which can be more <br />easily seen than dark clothing. <br />When walking in the evening <br />hours or dusk, try to wear some <br />type of reflective clothing. Many <br />walkers you see are now wearing <br />bright orange slip-on vests with <br />refiective stripes or tape on the <br />vest. <br /> <br />~ If walking after dark carry a <br />if flashiight and walk i~ well-lit <br />neighborhoods. <br /> <br />IP <br /> <br />When crossing a street, always <br />cross at the corner intersection <br />of the street and in designated <br />crosswalks if Possible. Never <br />cross in the middle of the street. <br /> <br />HASTINGS POLICE OFFICERS RECOGNIZED <br /> <br /> <br />Officers Christopher Weid and Nathan Wood have been <br />recognized by the Minnesota Chiefs of Police and received <br />the "Meritorious Service Award" from the State Police Chief's organization <br />on April 16, 2003. The award was given for the work done by Officers Weid <br />and Wood on a case received in September 2002 in which a female <br />psychologist/counselor had called the Hastings Police Department and <br />reported she was being held against her will and was being sexually <br />assaulted. The female had come to Hastings to meet an adult male and <br />begin providing counseling for him. The male refused to allow the female to <br />leave his apartment and began sexually assaulting her. Based on the <br />information provided, Officers Weid and Wood were able to track down the <br />location of the incident and interrupt the assault. The male was arrested <br />and has been charged with kidnapping/false imprisonment, criminal sexual <br />misconduct and 5~ degree assault. <br /> <br />The Minnesota Chief's Association recognizes police officers throughout <br />the state each year with these special awards and medals. Congratulations <br />to Officers Weid and Wood for this special achievement. <br /> <br />,~ <br /> <br />Bike Safety Reminders -:111-' <br />Hey bikers, remember that traffic laws for bikes /1 <br />are the same as traffic laws for motor vehicles <br />in some respects: <br /> <br />Bikes must stop at all posted stop signs. <br />Enter all uncontrolled intersections safely, looking in all directions <br />for traffic. <br />Bikes should be ridden on the far right side of the road going with <br />the flow of traffic. Groups of bikes should be ridden in single file <br />formation, one behind the other. <br />Bikes should not be ridden on the sidewalks. <br />Bikes must be equipped with reflectors on wheels and frames. <br />Bike riders are encourage to use hand signals when coming to a <br />stop or signaling a turn. <br />Only one person should be on a bike built for one. <br />During evening hours all night bike riders should wear reflective <br />clothing and should wear reflective clothing when possible. <br />Bike helmets are strongly encouraged to be worn, especially <br />by young and inexperienced bike riders. <br /> <br />. <br />
