Most cooking fires are caused by <br />peoples' behaviors, not appliance failures. The top three <br />known factors were: <br /> <br />25% Unattended equipment <br />12% Combustibles too close to heat <br />7% Accidentally turning on or not turning off a <br />burner <br /> <br />In 2002, there were 4 cooking-related civilian fire deaths <br />and 35 civilian injuries. <br /> <br />Some cooking injury facts: <br /> <br />Injuries from cooking fires are most prevalent among <br />people age 30 to 49. <br /> <br />Adults 65 and older have a smaller percentage of <br />cooking fires injuries compared to adults in other <br />age groups, yet their risk of dying from injuries <br />caused be these fires is 4 times greater than the <br />rest of the population. <br /> <br />Stop Grease Fires Safely <br />Take extra care when frying or deep-frying food or when <br />cooking with oils, lard, butter or other grease products. If a <br />grease fire occurs: <br />Call 911 <br /> <br />Turn off the burner, if you can do so safely. <br />Slide a lid or flat cookie sheet over the pan. <br />When using your fire extinguisher, do not spray <br />directly at the liquid grease so as not to spread the <br /> <br />fire. <br />Evacuate at members out of the residence. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br /> <br />.1 Stove and Oven <br />Safety: <br />~ Keep an eye on <br />all food being heated. <br />~ Wear short or <br />tight-fitting sleeves near hot burners and <br />avoid reaching over hot surfaces. <br />..e When using an electric stove, use <br />a burner that is the right size for the pan. <br />Using a burner that is too large can cause <br />the pan and its contents to heat to quickly, <br />leading to boil-over. <br />..e When using a gas stove, keep the <br />burner flame entirely under the pan. A <br />flame that surrounds the pan can ignite a <br />loose-fitting sleeve. <br />..e Fill pots to the proper level and heat <br />food at the indicated temperature to <br />prevent boil-over. Do not increase <br />temperature to shorten the cooking time. <br />..e Create a kid-free zone of 3 feet <br />around the stove, and supervise older <br />children as they cook. <br />..e Keep potholders, wooden utensils <br />and other combustibles away from hot <br />burners. <br /> <br /> <br />Above all test your <br />smoke detector! <br />87"0 of all fire <br />deaths occur on <br />residential property. <br /> <br />
